Ginger root powder: 320 mg
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) comes from Southeast Asia and was traded overland for more than two thousand years, long before refrigerated transport existed. What we call a ‘root’ is botanically an underground stem. 320 mg of dried powder is roughly equivalent to a slice of fresh ginger root the size of your thumbnail.
We deliberately make no statement about the effects of ginger: the EU has not yet approved a health claim for it. We state the amount, nothing more.
Turmeric root powder: 320 mg
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a relative of ginger and gives curry its deep yellow color. In India it is called haldi and is traditionally applied to the skin at weddings. Honest about the amount: 320 mg is about a tenth of a teaspoon — this is a declared, measured amount alongside the other ingredients, not a high-dose curcumin extract.
The same applies here: no approved EU claim yet, so no promise from us.
Magnesium (from magnesium oxide): 84 mg (22% RI)
Magnesium is found in nuts, whole grains and leafy green vegetables. For 84 mg you would have to eat about a handful of almonds — around 30 grams, every single day.
Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function and to normal psychological function.
This amount is well above the 15% RI that the EU uses as the threshold for these claims.
Chasteberry extract (Vitex agnus-castus, 0.5% agnusides): 60 mg
Chasteberry is a Mediterranean shrub whose dried berry used to serve as a cheap pepper substitute; the name refers to its use in monasteries. The extract is standardized to 0.5% agnusides, which means every batch contains the same amount of this marker compound.
There is no approved EU claim for chasteberry. So we promise nothing with it — we only tell you what is in it and how much. Contains chasteberry: not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Lemon balm extract 10:1: 60 mg
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a mint-family plant that smells of lemon as soon as you rub the leaf. Melissa is Greek for honeybee: beekeepers rubbed the leaf inside the hive to keep swarms at home. A 10:1 extract means that 60 mg corresponds to 600 mg of dried leaf.
No EU claim here either, so no promise about effects.
Angelica root extract (dong quai, 1% ligustilide): 60 mg
Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) is an umbellifer from the Chinese mountains; the root is one of the classic herbs of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Standardized to 1% ligustilide.
No approved EU claim, so no promise. Contains angelica root: not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Zinc sulfate: 30 mg
Zinc is found in shellfish, pumpkin seeds and legumes. The manufacturer declares 30 mg zinc sulfate per daily dose and does not break out salt and elemental zinc; for that reason we state no elemental amount and no %RI here. Under any reading of that declaration, the claim threshold is met.
Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction, to the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin, and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
Black pepper extract (BioPerine®): 5 mg
BioPerine® is a standardized extract of black pepper (Piper nigrum), provided in a fixed amount of 5 mg per daily dose. Five milligrams is less than what you get from a single turn of the pepper mill over your plate.
There is no approved EU claim for black pepper; we state only the amount.
Vitamin B6 (from pyridoxine HCl): 1.96 mg (140% RI)
Vitamin B6 is found in fish, chicken, banana and potato. For 1.96 mg you would have to eat about five bananas — in a single day.
Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity, to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
At 140% RI, this is one of the two most heavily dosed nutrients in the formula.
Vitamin D3 (plant-based): 10 µg (200% RI)
Your skin makes vitamin D itself under the influence of sunlight — in the Netherlands only between roughly April and October, and only if you get outside. Fatty fish is almost the only noteworthy dietary source: for 10 µg you are looking at about 50 grams of herring.
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to the maintenance of normal bones and to the maintenance of normal muscle function.
The D3 in this formula is plant-based; the whole formula is therefore suitable for vegans.
