What is the difference between folate, folic acid and methylfolate?
Folate is the collective name for vitamin B9. Folic acid is the synthetic form widely used in supplements. This product contains folate as calcium L-methylfolate (5-MTHF), the form of folate that circulates in the blood.
Both forms are permitted in food supplements in the EU, and the same EU health claims for folate apply to both. We make no statements about differences in effect.
What does 5-MTHF mean in these capsules with 800 µg of folate?
5-MTHF stands for 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. In this product it is present as calcium L-methylfolate: folate bound to calcium. One capsule provides 800 µg of folate (400 % RI).
Is this suitable when trying to conceive or during pregnancy?
The EU has authorised this health claim for folate: Folate contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.
What you need to know about pregnancy and trying to conceive is under ‘How to take’.
What is the difference between methylfolate and a vitamin B complex?
A B complex contains several B vitamins in one tablet or capsule. This product contains only folate (vitamin B9): 800 µg per capsule. Handy if you only want to top up folate.
Isn't 800 µg folate per capsule too much?
The reference intake (RI) for folate is 200 µg a day. One capsule provides 800 µg, which is 400% RI.
Stick to 1 capsule a day.
